ICYMI, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is replacing Universal Analytics (UA, aka, GA3).
Data collection on standard UA properties will end on July 1, 2023, so all of Google Analytics' 28M+ freemium users will need to make the switch to GA4 by then.
The timeline:
- March 2023: If you haven't created a GA4 property, Google will create one for you, unless you opt out.
- Until July 1, 2023: Users can continue to use and collect new data in their Universal Analytics properties.
- After July 1, 2023: Users can access past processed Universal Analytics data for at least six months, and are encouraged to export all historical reports during this time.
The key facts:
- Historical data from UA will not be copied to GA4; all users get a clean slate.
- GA4 will make your data analytics activities more compliant with EU privacy laws, but you won't be able to follow user behavior in the same ways as before.
- While many may be debating the future of the search giant, it's advisable to transition to GA4 while UA is still available. This will help build the necessary historical data and usage experience to ensure continuity once Universal Analytics is no longer available.
